FUNDRAISING
Our next big venture is dealing with Sensory Integration Dysfunction
It is a neurological disorder causing difficulties with processing information from the five classic senses
Vision, sound, touch, smell and taste
The sense of movement (vestibular system)
And the positional sense (proprioception)

Children with SID often….
Love to spin, swing and jump – this calms them down
Complain of how clothing feels, need tags removed and have to have their socks on just so
Are picky eaters and will often only eat one particular food
Are over or under sensitive to smells, often sniffing people, objects and food
Are over sensitive to sound and will cover their ears
Are under sensitive to sound
Have a high pain tolerance
May tire easily
Have unusually high or low activity levels
Resist new situations
Have problems with muscle tone, co-ordination, motor planning
Are very impulsive or distractible
They can be helped by a Sensory diet
Created jointly by an occupational therapist and the parents
A diet of daily activities to calm and organise the body
Carefully designed programme of sensory input throughout the day implemented at home and school
Can create profound, lasting changes in the child’s nervous system
Therapy session
The occupational therapist works closely with the child to provide the right level of sensory stimulation encouraging movement within the room
The way forward
Heathfield has many children that would benefit from a sensory diet
We want to work closely with such children
To achieve this we must structurally alter a space
We must furnish the space with specialist equipment
We must employ an occupational therapist to conduct the sessions
Then we can offer this Sensory Integration Dysfunction provision to the wider community
We have our space, an existing area within the school, and now we need to
adapt this space for specialist use
furnish the space with specialist equipment
employ an Occupational Therapist
