January 2018

Maths

This term Maple class will be learning about Numberincluding matching groups and counting.  For weight we will be focusing on heavy and  light . We will be learning about copying, finishing and creating patterns with a shape and colour theme.

English

Our topic for this term is “Time Team” and we will be reading “Dinosaur Roar, Dinosaur Stomp , Dinosaur Munch and Jaspers Bean Stalk.  The topic includes introducing  verbs, communicating about aspects of the story and acting out parts of the story to reinforce understanding. We will be continuing our library sessions with a theme of dinosaurs and fossil books and including skills in sharing a book with a partner and getting familiar with parts of a book.

Topic

As part of our topic of “Time Team“ we will be exploring the school grounds for different rocks sorting by colours and size. We will also be carrying out a local area study identifying town and country features with plenty of bus trips to support the topic . Our value bands are trust and Happiness for this half term and we will also be learning about emotions and taking part in friendship week. 

General news

 

This  term we will be working with Dawn the dance and drama teacher.  Our art  theme we will be learning about texture and pattern including leaf rubbing, printing onto paper and impressing textures into clay . For Music we will be learning to play both fast and slow , loud and quiet  music with some fun songs and instrument. For DT we will be learning about healthy foods.

November 2017

Maths

Maple class will be learning about measures  this half term including night and day , ordering events in the day  and  size and pattern nearer to Christmas. We have also been improving our counting skills in all sorts of fun places including the children using their number and requesting skills in the swimming pool.

General news

The term leading up to Christmas is normally a busy one and this year is no exception.  We will be working with Vicky from the Hampshire music service every week till the holidays . We will also  be preparing for a Christmas Sensory assembly and joining in Friendship week and Children in Need day. We are also looking forward to the Thomas the tank Engine staff Christmas show.

We will be looking at the book “Polar Bear Polar bear what did you hear ” and a variety of interactive sound books. We will be practicing our fine motor and pre writing skills , working towards patterns and letter formation. We will be visiting the library every week to share a variety of books.  We have also been looking at the book “ I love Music “ with a view to  the children recording instrument sounds for their own sound book. 

Topic

Our topic about Light and sound began  this half term with some neon paint  firework art work and firework biscuits.  We also exploring things that light up in our dark tent and exploring shadow shapes. We will also hope to  visit the tunnels at Fort Nelson to try out our torches. Our value band is Individuality for this half term and we will also be learning about emotions and making good choices. 

 

September 2017

Maths

Maple class will be learning about number through songs and rhymes and measures including night and day and becoming familiar with the order of the school day. 

We will also be comparing size, weight and capacity. 

 

General news

We are all settling in well to our new Class and getting to know the new children and adults in Maple. We have started the term by looking at our class rules and we will be starting our Value band soon.  Lunchtimes are about to get even more exciting  with the introduction of  a scooter track and a new trolley of toys for us to explore which we are very excited about.

Topic

Out topic theme this term is “We’ve Got The Power”  which  includes learning about things that make light or sounds and has a science focus. We will be visiting the outdoor classroom every two weeks and with Maria we will be looking at what lives and grows in the school grounds.

   


April 2017

English

We have enjoyed a number of books this half term with a theme of water.  We started with “Pig in the Pond” and our final book was “In the Pond” which followed the lifecycle of the frog. We have been learning about picture captions and speech bubbles. We also enjoyed our trip to Stubbington Library as part of book week.  Next half term we will focusing book with a theme of food including “The Magic Porridge Pot” and “World food Alphabet”.

Maths

Maple class has been busy learning about measures including capacity and height, place value, money and position and direction the last of which came in handy for our Easter Egg hunt in the last week.

Next term we are continuing geometry, measures focusing on time, revisit multiplication and number.

General news

The “happy” bands have been fun to fill in this half term  and many children are close to earning them. For PDL we are focusing on Happiness. Everyone enjoyed dressing up for Red Nose day and last week the school got together to release our beautiful butterflies who emerged just in time for the sunny weather. Next half term we are planning a grounds day to tidy up our outside areas and develop the learning space outside classes. We also have a school “Outdoor week” planned.

Topic

We have been studying the frog life cycle and collected some tadpoles from the school pond. We learned about evaporation and condensation as part of our study of the water cycle.  In Geography we have been learning about geographical features and enjoyed our bus trip out spotting different features between the school and Portsdown Hill. We also enjoyed using google maps to learn about the school grounds and local area.  Next term we start our topic on “Food Glorious Food” 

March 2017

English

We have been practicing writing letters during the last half term. We wrote a persuasive letter to Steve to come and read us his favourite stories. We really enjoyed all his stories. After the half term break it’s book week which has a theme of bugs. Our class book will be “Aaaarrgghh! Spider!”. There will be lots of fun activities including bug hunts, cooking, building a bug hotel for our new outdoor classroom and a bug week fashion show. We will also be visiting Stubbington Library. We will also be visiting Staunton Country Park.

  

Maths

Maple class have been working with measures and number skills in the last half term. We especially enjoyed National Maths Day.  This half term we will be looking at measures and giving the children experience with non-standard and standard measures. The children will also be focusing on place value and money this half term.

General news

The “Trust” bands were a great success and many children are close to earning them. For  PDL we are focusing on friendship skills.  Verity, our theatre  arts/dance professional, will be planning the school’s summer “Time to Shine” showcase. Classes will  start to practice their performances in the summer term. We have also started Lego therapy in class for those children who would benefit from improving their communication skills.

 

Topic

In the last half term we have started to look at the water cycle, specifically what clouds are made of. During the next half  term we will be studying physical geographical features both in class using maps and out and about. There is a drawing theme for our art sessions with Helen and for Computing we will be working on digital literacy, using cameras, internet search engines and creating simple charts. For Science we are continuing to look at changing states (solids, liquids and gasses) with a focus on  evaporation and condensation.

Maths

Maple class have been working on a range of topics. We have looking at grouping, sharing and creating arrays.   We have been doing lots of practical activities including sharing snack equally and using spaghetti and cheerio's to makes groups of 5.  We have also been using our two times table to  count up to 100.
